The African Space Policy is grounded in the vision of Agenda 2063, which aspires to a united, prosperous, and integrated continent where all citizens, especially women and youth, can fully realize their potential in conditions of freedom, well-being, and security. Achieving these aspirations requires addressing Africa’s key development challenges, including those related to agriculture, natural and water resources, energy, the blue economy, and digital infrastructure, alongside pressing issues such as climate change, environmental degradation, and natural and human-induced disasters that continue to affect livelihoods and economic productivity.
In response, the African Union developed the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (STISA 2024) to harness science and innovation for continental transformation. Within this framework, the African Space Policy and Strategy, adopted in 2016, serves as a foundational instrument for advancing Africa’s space agenda. It recognizes space science and technology as critical tools for sustainable resource management, socio-economic development, job creation, and poverty reduction. By enabling better planning, monitoring, and decision-making across sectors, the policy supports the emergence of a formal space sector that contributes to a peaceful, integrated, and prosperous Africa.
